About

Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian cultural expression that combines elements of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Originating in Brazil during the colonial period, capoeira was developed by enslaved Africans as a form of resistance and preservation of their culture and identity. Over the years, it has evolved and spread worldwide, gaining recognition as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2014.

The practice of capoeira serves various purposes. Besides being a physical exercise that improves strength, flexibility, and motor coordination, capoeira also promotes social integration and cultural expression. It is used in educational contexts to teach history, culture, and inculcate discipline and respect.

The benefits of capoeira are extensive. Physically, it develops cardiovascular endurance, balance, and agility. Mentally, capoeira stimulates concentration, creativity, and resilience. Socially, it fosters inclusion, teamwork, and respect for diversity.

Music and instruments play a central role in capoeira. The capoeira circle, where players meet, is accompanied by a percussion ensemble of typical instruments: the berimbau (a single-string instrument that sets the rhythm and style of the game), pandeiro (tambourine), atabaque (a type of drum), agogô (a metal percussion instrument), and reco-reco (a friction instrument). The songs, called ladainhas, chulas, and corridos, contain lyrics that tell stories, convey teachings, and motivate participants. The musicality of capoeira not only sets the rhythm of the game but also creates an atmosphere of connection and energy among capoeiristas.

Capoeira is a rich and multifaceted practice that goes beyond a simple physical activity. It is a celebration of cultural resilience and creativity, providing significant physical, mental, and social benefits to its practitioners.

Dance

I believe that through dance we develop coordination, self-expression and fitness in a joyful manner. My teaching philosophy is to focus on the basic rhythms and build the fundamentals. From rhythmic awareness and coordination each dancer is then free to develop their individual expression.

I teach latin rhythms, including

  • Forro
  • Salsa
  • Samba
  • Axé
  • Maculelé
